A special Independence Day Service and Flag Hoisting was organized on 15th August 2021 at 7:30 am in front of the Phule Hostel, Gurukul College to celebrate 75th Independence Day. This year’s celebration was special as Gurukul community decided to not only remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the soldiers at the borders protecting our nation, but also to remember and pray for the soldiers among us such as healthcare givers, civil servants, municipal workers, teachers, labourers and farmers, who have been risking their lives for the sake of the citizens during this pandemic. In line with it Dr. J. Jerene Jayanth, Director of CSI Kalyani Multi-Speciality Hospital, was invited as a Chief Guest to honour the selfless service and medical care provided by his team and by other medical professionals to those who were affected by pandemic and saving their lives.
Though we were small in number keeping up with the Covid protocol, the celebration was grand and colourful with special songs from faculty members and students, cultural dance from campus kids and special prayers for the nation by UELCI staff. Dr.Jerene Jayanth unfurled the national flag and gave an inspiring speech reminding us about our freedom in Christ and how we need to preserve this freedom by spreading peace and upholding justice for the poor and vulnerable. The service was concluded with singing the prayer song written by Rabindranath Tagore – ‘where the mind is without fear’ and by maintaining one-minute silence to pay homage to the heroes and martyrs who died on duty. We left from there praying to God to continue to give us freedom, faith and courage to love our neighbour as ourselves and to serve our nation.
