Forming Faithful Disciples

Faith is at the heart of Gurukul’s theological vocation. At Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute, faith is understood not simply as intellectual assent to Christian beliefs, but as a living relationship with God expressed through discipleship, community, worship, ethical responsibility and participation in God’s mission in the world.

Gurukul’s identity is rooted in its calling as an ecumenical theological community communicating the liberative Gospel of Jesus Christ. Its mission connects theological education with the transformation of God’s people towards peace, justice and the integrity of God’s creation.

Faith that is lived

The Christian faith cannot remain confined to classrooms, Sunday worship or theological statements. It must become visible in the way people live, relate to one another and respond to the needs of the world.

Gurukul seeks to nurture women and men who are spiritually grounded, intellectually responsible and prepared to participate faithfully in the ministry of the Church. Its residential and community-oriented character provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to learn not only through formal academic programmes but also through worship, fellowship, dialogue and shared life.

The very name “Gurukul”, derived from the Sanskrit guru and kula, carries the idea of a learning community in which teachers and students live and learn together as a family. This vision has contributed to Gurukul’s distinctive approach to theological education.

Faith and discipleship

Gurukul’s educational vision therefore seeks to connect belief with praxis. Faith asks not only, “What do we believe?” but also, “How shall we live faithfully in God’s world?”

This means cultivating:

  1. a deepening relationship with God;

  2. commitment to Scripture and Christian tradition;

  3. prayer and worship;

  4. responsible Christian discipleship;

  5. openness to ecumenical and interfaith engagement;

  6. sensitivity to the suffering and struggles of people;

commitment to peace, justice and creation.

The present theological vision of Gurukul explicitly brings together creed, confession, discipleship, spirituality and social responsibility. It challenges the Church to confess Christ not merely within the sanctuary but also in the public life of society.

Faith in a changing world

In today’s digital and rapidly changing world, Christian faith faces new questions. Social media, artificial intelligence, religious polarization, misinformation, ecological crisis, economic inequality and changing patterns of human relationships all challenge the Church to rethink how faith is communicated and lived.

Gurukul’s vocation is therefore not simply to preserve faith from one generation to another, but to enable the Christian community to discern God’s presence and mission within changing contexts.

Faith at Gurukul is ultimately a faith that listens, learns, witnesses and acts.

A faith for the Church and the world

Gurukul seeks to form people whose faith is intellectually responsible, spiritually rooted and socially engaged. The goal is not merely to produce knowledgeable graduates, but women and men whose lives bear witness to the Gospel.

Faith, therefore, is not only what we confess. It is how we participate in God’s transforming work in the world.

“Faith becomes credible when it becomes visible in life, relationships and service.”
